Parody of Czech Television in the series Dobré ráno, Brno! as a modern form of television entertainment
Straka, Tomáš ; Kruml, Milan (advisor) ; Štoll, Martin (referee)
This thesis deals with the analysis of the television series "Dobré ráno, Brno!" produced by Czech Television. The series serves as a parody of the original show "Dobré ráno", which is broadcast on weekdays and aims to provide "a morning dose of information and music, accompanied by interesting guests and tips". Czech Television has created a series that daringly parodies not only itself as a significant institution, including its employees, but also the television industry as a whole. The series allows for the analysis of key concepts of television entertainment, such as the use of parody, satire, humour, and hyperbole. The aim of this thesis is to determine the nature of parody in the series "Dobré ráno, Brno!" in relation to Czech Television and to examine how the series contributes to a greater genre diversity in television entertainment, particularly in the areas of parody, satire, and humour. The research method selected for this study is semiotic analysis, with an emphasis on the analysis of meanings on the level of denotation and connotation following the approach of Roland Barthes. The detailed semiotic analysis includes analysis of dialogues and verbal signs, examination of sound design, and the overall mise-en-scène analysis, including the analysis of individual characters, costumes,...
Typology of spam email written in Czech language
Vejda, Prokop ; Mňuková, Dominika (advisor) ; Podzimek, Jan (referee)
The presented thesis proposes a new typology system for Czech-language email spam. Its categorization is based primarily on the persuasive method used. Particular factors relevant for the classification are derived from subsurface observations via the method of semiotic analysis. The multi-layered typology differentiates between spam sales and imitation spam, between identity-imitating and situation-imitating spam. Another layer of categorization identifies the area of incentive for the desired action. The areas are finance, health, sexuality, and consumption. Ideological spam is recognized as a separate category. The typology derives validity from its application to a sample of Czech spam emails originating between January and April 2023. The method used is quantitative content analysis, which allowed the observed characteristics to be presented in a statistical context. Furthermore, it made it possible to elementarily map the nature of spam appearing in the email inboxes of Czech-speaking recipients at the beginning of 2023. The research is based upon a survey of existing typological systems and cases of the application of semiotic analysis to email spam. Theoretical research pillars are the concepts of the social role, speech acts, mythology, and uncertainty of meanings in communication. The...
Visual framing of the war in Ukraine
Zítko, Tomáš ; Lábová, Sandra (advisor) ; Géla, František (referee)
The thesis "Visual Framing of the War in Ukraine" examines how Czech and foreign newspapers construct the media image of this conflict in published photographs. The theoretical focus of the thesis is mainly on framing theory and its visual dimension, agenda setting and peace journalism, using this normative direction as a starting point for the frames analysed in the practical part of the thesis. The analysis combines quantitative and qualitative approaches The aim of the quantitative part of the analysis was to fill in the previously missing data on the visual framing of the war in Ukraine by Czech and foreign media. Furthermore, it focused on the development of the frequency of photographic coverage of the analysed conflict and the identification of the roles of actors appearing in the images. The qualitative part attempted to explore the findings of the quantitative part in more depth by analysing a selected part of the images depicting the identified frames.
The manifestations of technological determinism on the selection of news topics in ČT24 and ČRo Radiožurnál
Bečková, Kateřina ; Jirků, Jan (advisor) ; Trunečka, Ondřej (referee)
The diploma thesis entitled The manifestations of technological determinism on the selection of news topics in ČT24 and ČRo Radiožurnál seeks an answer whether the choice of news topics in TV and radio is influenced by the available technologies in each of the media, and whether they eventually choose different events to cover. The theoretical part describes concepts of gatekeeping, news values and also technological determinism. In the practical part then the author analysed three days in broadcast of the chosen media, in each it was two-hour segments around the main news at noon and in the evening. Selected topics, that ČT24 had and Radiožurnál did not, have been later analysed by semiotic analyses in order to find whether the visuals were the factor why the event was not presented by the radio. Context of the findings were given by six semi-structured interviews with journalists form both radio and television. From all the data obtained, it is evident that the television had dozens of topics more per day, caused by the time space given to the news reporting. Unlike Český rozhlas Radiožurnál, ČT24 focused significantly on the visual side of events, which could be the reason why editorial board may reject a topic proposed by the reporters.
Antisemitic memes on 4chan.org
Feistinger, Aleš ; Vochocová, Lenka (advisor) ; Nečas, Vlastimil (referee)
In my thesis I address three questions: 1. What are the principles of memes? 2. What categories of anti-Semitic memes can we identify on 4chan.org? And 3. how do they relate to existing knowledge about anti-Semitic propaganda? To answer the first question, I review current theories ranging from active audiences, through Internet memes, to the interaction of memes and politics. Furthermore in the theoretical section, I describe the website 4chan.org (including its boards /b/ and /pol/) and the current form of anti-Semitism on the Internet. For the research of the second question, I have identified semiotic analysis, complemented by grounded theory, as the most appropriate methodology. I present its methodology and practical use, followed by presenting results including subcategories and illustrative examples. The thesis concludes by integrating the most important findings into current knowledge and anti-Semitism and thus answering the third research question. Finally, the main findings are summarized.
